Class 4 MOT Testing in Whatlington

It is a legal requirement for all cars and light commercial vehicles over three years old to undergo an annual MOT test. This test ensures your vehicle meets the safety and environmental standards required to remain roadworthy and legal on UK roads.
At Whatlington Garage, we’re proud to serve the Hastings area and surrounding towns with Class 4 MOT testing, suitable for most cars, small vans and 4x4s. Our DVSA-approved MOT bay offers hourly testing slots, a comfortable waiting area, and experienced, friendly technicians.

What is an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old, carried out annually to ensure your vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards set by the DVSA.
You can book your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires, and your new certificate will still run from the expiry date.
If your vehicle is exempt (for example, classic cars over 40 years old or newly registered vehicles), you may not need an MOT. If you're unsure, we can help you check.

What’s Checked in an MOT?

The MOT test includes a range of safety-critical components. Some of the areas we inspect are:
  • Lights & Signals
  • Brakes & Tyres
  • Suspension & Steering
  • Windscreen, Wipers & Washers
  • Horn & Mirrors
  • Seatbelts, Seats & Airbags
  • Exhaust & Emissions
  • Fuel System
  • Bodywork, Doors & Bonnet Catch
  • Number Plate & VIN
We may also issue MOT advisories for anything that isn’t an immediate failure but may need attention soon.

What Happens if My Car Fails?

Nobody wants a failed MOT, but if it happens, don’t panic, we’ll walk you through the next steps and help you get back on the road as soon as possible.
After the test, we’ll provide a detailed failure report explaining why your vehicle didn’t pass. You’ll then have a few options, depending on the nature of the faults and how you’d like to proceed.

Repairs at Whatlington Garage

If you leave your vehicle with us for repair and we carry out the necessary work, you’ll get a free partial retest within 10 working days.

Repairs elsewhere? No problem

If you prefer to have repairs done elsewhere, you can still return your car to us within 10 working days for a partial retest.

Return after 10 working days

If the vehicle comes back after the 10-day window, or if the same/new issues are present, a full MOT at full price will be needed.

Dangerous faults

If your vehicle fails due to a dangerous defect, it is illegal to drive until it has been repaired. It must either be fixed on-site or transported away.
We'll always be upfront with our advice and pricing, and you're under no obligation to have repairs carried out by us. If you'd like a quote or second opinion, just ask!

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about your MOT? You're not alone! Here are some of the most common things our customers ask before, during, and after their MOT. If you’re still unsure about anything, just give us a call.

You can book your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before your current certificate expires. The expiry date of your new MOT will still be based on the old certificate, so you don’t lose any time.

You can check your MOT due date for free on the official GOV.UK website. Just enter your vehicle registration. Alternatively, ask us, we're happy to help you find out.

A Class 4 MOT covers cars, small vans, motorhomes, and 4x4s with up to 8 passenger seats. This is the most common MOT class and applies to the vast majority of private vehicles on the road. We can MOT most Class 4 MOT's, although we do have a height restriction due to the rollerdoor so motorhomes and high top vans can be problematic.

No. Unless you're driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment, it's illegal to drive without a valid MOT. You could face a fine of up to £1,000 and your insurance may be invalidated.

You will not automatically recieve an MOT reminder, if you have used our services before you will be reminded. We offer a free reminder service and can get you registered on our system for MOT and Service reminders via SMS and Email.

In virtually all cases, nothing! But if your vehicle is having its first MOT or has had a number plate change, please bring your V5C logbook. There may be some instances where additional information is required e.g. engine changes, but this is a rare exception.

Yes! Our MOTs usually take 60 minutes. You’re welcome to wait in our comfy reception area with Wi-Fi and free tea & coffee, or drop your car off and we’ll call you when it’s ready.

An MOT is a legal safety check, while a service is a more in-depth check that helps maintain your vehicle's health. We recommend doing both to keep your car in top condition, but they are separate.

Yes! Our technicians are fully trained and qualified to MOT both hybrid and electric vehicles.

If your car fails, we’ll explain why and advise on the next steps. You’ll get a free partial retest if the repairs are done within 10 working days, either with us or elsewhere.
